Time for a digital makeover?
Despite our intellectual desire for innovation, constant gadget upgrades, and extolling modern day benefits like flexible work spaces, we really are creatures of habit. We like our tea made in a certain way, have a favourite seat on the bus, and tend to organise our days with particular routines. Change is often uncomfortable, it requires adjustment and being okay with an element of uncertainty.
This is why we continue to work on outdated data integration systems, making do just because it ‘works fine’ and is comfortable (plus it’s also comfortable to complain about those same outdated systems). This isn’t just on an individual level, it applies to larger organisation and corporations as well– how many of us only just stopped getting paper bank statements? Not to mention the budgetary considerations that come with big upgrades, training staff on new systems, smoothing out the infrastructure kinks… See, already you’re exhausted and stressed at the thought of change on such a large scale.
Yet there comes a time when you need to face the music– or update, as it were, and catch sight of the bigger picture in digital transformation.
Let’s take hospitals, for example. They’re large organisations with many different facets, facilities and roles that deal with a lot of sensitive data on various levels of access. You have doctors and clinicians, internal and external services, security and IT. Often as these bodies move across different services they need to access appropriate programs and information on different devices securely and quickly.
But picture this: most of these computers are on different versions, some only allow one user and login at a time, various applications are not available on that device, or it’s just so slow that you might as well have gone back up five floors to your other computer to get the necessary information. This results in time wasted, insecure data points, and limitations on workflow; the list goes on…
Let's get practical...
Time for a New Perspective
So yes, it’s time for an upgrade. Low and behold, there are systems that make the information you need easily accessible in a secure, connected environment across multiple devices and environments. Systems that do regular upgrades instead of ‘big bang migrations’ every few years. Digital transformation through secure workspace services should no longer something that would be ‘nice to have’, it’s become a necessity.
One of the benefits of using a ‘WaaS’ ie. a Workspace as a Service cloud provider is that instead of constantly playing catch-up with your upgrades you actually have a consistently updated, secure yet easily accessible system that empowers those who use it most.
Digital services like Citrix, for example, specialise in moving organisations from limited legacy systems to a digitally relevant, integrated web platform that’s comprehensively designed to meet the needs of the people who actually use them every day. They create virtual desktops that allow for a streamlined workflow, utilise updates that are pushed simultaneously across all devices instead of staggered, not to mention the reduction in long-term management costs.
This means your IT department might actually have a chance at addressing real issues (about clinical applications, for example) instead of the emergencies that tend to result in being asked “have you tried turning your computer off and on again?” You’ll be able to do a proper ‘spring clean’ of your data systems, removing outdated, obsolete, or even dangerous applications and processes clogging up your network.
Welcome to 2018
Embrace the Discomfort
However, this also means a shift of mindset, opening yourself and organisation to a new process and rhythm, and possibly needing to do a bit of change management to ease the transition. But often a bigger vision that calls for innovation and digital transformation requires an element of discomfort. So let’s get uncomfortable.
