A number of well-known brands also originated in Birmingham including HP Sauce, Typhoo Tea, and Cadbury's chocolate.

Over 16,000 start-ups were recorded in the year 2013, which meant that Birmingham had the second largest number of entrepreneurs in the country after London. In 2020 it was known as the start up capital of the UK with over 18,000 start-ups recorded (outside of London) for the 7th year running.

Technology

Birmingham's technology sector benefits from a skilled workforce to help with various different emerging technologies.

Many university graduates are increasingly staying to live and work within the city, drawn by its affordable quality of life and the opportunity to find employment within the technology sector.

Growth in this sector is driven by local networks including Innovation Birmingham and Silicon Canal, whilst Finance Birmingham also help drive growth and create jobs by offering loan funding and equity finance.

People are increasingly moving from other cities such as London to Birmingham, attracted by more jobs and workspaces for digital firms.

A vast percentage of Birmingham's economy is accounted for by the retail industry. Outside of London, Birmingham is the busiest shopping destination in the entire country and boasts a number of large shopping centres including the famous Bullring.

Famous department stores including Selfridges and Harvey Nichols have a presence within the city.

Designer and high-end fashion retail is accounted for by the Mailbox shopping centre.

Tourism

As the 4th most visited city in the country, Birmingham is a major draw for tourists both within the UK and from around the world. Birmingham's financial and insurance services industry is the 4th largest in the country with over 100,000 employed in this sector.

As well as being home to the two biggest sets of barrister's chambers in the UK, Birmingham also has a number of major property firms, a local law society, and a considerable insurance market. Ernst & Young and PwC, two of the biggest service organisations in the country, both have a major presence in Birmingham's CBD.

As Birmingham is mainly a result of the Industrial Revolution, there aren't many buildings still intact from its early history.

Birmingham has over 1,900 listed buildings as well as 13 scheduled ancient monuments.

Evidence of medieval architecture can be found in some of the city's older churches, and there are also some Georgian buildings still intact.

Early History

During the medieval period, Birmingham was a market town in Warwickshire.

The growth of the city during the 1700s can be attributed to the Midlands Enlightenment followed by the Industrial Revolution. In the late 18th century, Birmingham was often referred to as the first manufacturing town in the world owing to major advances in technology and science.

The city became a hub of creative innovation; one of the various inventions produced in the city was the Watt steam engine.

Birmingham is also credited with having a crucial role in developing modern British democracy, thanks to its politically radical culture.

During the Second World War, Birmingham sustained heavy damage from bombing in what came to be referred to as the Birmingham Blitz.

Quality of Life

A 2014 Mercer Quality of Living Survey ranked Birmingham as the 51st best place to live in the world and by 2019 it had climbed to 49th place.

Birmingham is also noted as being the best pace to invest in property in the entire country; this is due to the fact that house prices climbed five per cent whilst a lot of local investment went into infrastructure.

The Big City Plan which was formed in 2008 has the objective of pushing Birmingham into the top 20 in the world.

An enterprise zone was created within the city in a bid to bring in investment by offering simplified planning and tax relief.
