Early History of Leeds
Initially known as Loidis, Leeds in ancient times consisted of an area of woodlands in Elmet, a Celtic kingdom.
Records indicate that Leeds existed as far back as the Norman conquest of England. In the 16th century, Leeds was a market town located by the River Aire.
Sheep farming by Cistercian monks during the Middle Ages and it was around this time that weaving and cloth trading began to take off. During the Industrial Revolution, Leeds became a significant mill town.
Whilst the focus was still on wool, other emerging industries during this period included engineering, printing, flax, and iron foundries.
The establishment of a railway network in 1834 helped connect the city to Manchester which helped speed up development.
