Chelmsford is in Essex and just 30 miles from our capital, London.
For the commuter it only takes 30 minutes on the Great Eastern Main Line to the centre of London.
The urban area of Chelmsford has a population of 112,000 whilst the district is recorded at 168,310.
From Chelmsford’s humble beginnings as a market town, it grew in the 19th century to become a centre for industry.
Until the 1850s milling and malting were the main industries with the opening of a company called Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation in 1797 which created cheaper transportation of raw materials.
Following that foundries and engineering came to the city with Fell Christy opening a factory, this still exists today trading under Christy Turner Ltd now based in Ipswich.
Many international companies are based in Chelmsford too, M&G Group a global investment manager, and Teledyne e2v and ebm-papst both manufacturing companies.
The city employs around 80,000 people in the commercial side of Chelmsford.
From last recorded records in 2002, the city enjoys a low unemployment rate and a ‘well educated’ workforce meaning over 9% hold a degree of some kind.
Chelmsford Business Park has some large companies based inside it, Anderson Group and Global Marine Systems for example.
An important part of Chelmsford’s business history is with the Marconi Company.
In 1899, Guglielmo Marconi launched the world’s first ‘wireless’ factory and for this reason Chelmsford is hailed as the birthplace of radio.
In June 1920, the factory was the first place to broadcast sound on the airwaves and in 1922 there were regular broadcasts for entertainment coming from the Marconi premises.
Marconi finally closed its doors with operations being bought off and some moved to Basildon.
The factory site remained empty and vandalised for some time until Bellway Homes stepped in demolishing the site in 2013.
Other historic businesses were also based here, Britvic, English Electric Valve Company, Cromptons Electrical Engineering, and Hoffman Ball Bearings.
The CSES (Chelmsford Science and Engineering Society) have reported that schools across Chelmsford are encouraging students to embark on a brand new technology project.

The city has its own Film Festival that takes place annually at the Everyman Cinema.
The local paper was started in 1764, the Essex Chronicle and was once printed in the same town.
In addition to that there is a free magazine, ‘Edge’ aimed at the older Chelmsfordians and a monthly ‘The Face of Chelmsford’ magazine delivered to 12,000 homes.
