Early History

Originally a Roman settlement seized by the Saxons and then again by the Vikings, this city was a humble market town until growing rapidly in the Industrial Revolution and is hailed as the birthplace of this time period with the building of Lombe’s Mill, the UK’s first water powered silk mill and early factory.

In fact, before this time in 1692 the town became the first place to put in place a civic system of piped water through wooden water pipes.

In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie once settled in Derby and set up his war council on his way to seize the British Crown before he went home with his tail between his legs.

The eighteenth century saw Eramus Darwin, grandfather to Charles Darwin set up the Derby Philosophical Society.

Derby soon became an emerging engineering centre in the nineteenth century with the North Midland Railway setting up their headquarters there and this label carried Derby right through to 1907 when Rolls Royce cemented that by setting up a car and aircraft factory in the town.

Today it is worth noting is that Derby is home and cultural centre to a large deaf community, there is said to be three times the national average of the sign language community living in the city.
