Early History

Newcastle dates back as far as 2,000 years and first controlled by the Romans but it was the Middle Ages when this town became greatly developed which led Newcastle to being a key city in the Industrial Revolution.

The development in the Middle Ages was largely down to the city becoming a centre for armies to assemble as the civil wars with Scotland gathered pace.

Before long, the first jetties into the sea were formed and the cities import and export trade had begun, trading largely in wool, timber, coal, dairy, fish, salt and hide.

With the arrival of the eighteenth-century Newcastle became the largest centre for printing aside from London, Oxford, and Cambridge.

When the Industrial Revolution came to Newcastle in the nineteenth-century shipbuilding and engineering lead the way alongside being the number one place to produce and export coal.

A school of Medicine and Surgery had been set up in the city in 1834 but the University was established in 1963 and by 1992 there was a second university when Newcastle Polytechnic became Northumbria University.
