There was an occupation by the Romans too with finds of mass ceramic production. The Anglo Saxons built the Cathedral, but the population didn’t start to really grow until the Industrial Revolution through the establishment of the Great Northern Railway lines.

This is when the city became well known for brick manufacturing taking Peterborough from a market town to an industrial centre.

By the twentieth century Peterborough had become the leading area for brick production. In 1932 Perkins Engines based itself inside the city manufacturing diesel engines for the railways.

From 1971 to 1991 the population grew notably by 45.5% which drew in new industries such as service-based companies like Thomas Cook and Pearl Associations.
