In 2005 there was an economic boom in Peterborough with an economy growth of 5.5% in the UK, Peterborough was at 6.9% growth.

Due to this growth the business population grew too seeing opportunity to capitalise and from April to September in 2006 this grew by 3.78%.

Peterborough City Council set up a not-for-profit business called Opportunity Peterborough as an urban regeneration business.

Top companies operating in the city are Thomas Cook, Anglian Water, Gousto, B&M headquarters, CWP Corporation, CDW, John Lewis, County Court Care and Pertemps.

Pre Covid The Times published a list featuring 250 illustrious mid-market private companies operating in the UK.

Four of those are operating in Peterborough; the digital provider of insurance and price comparison company BGL Group, plus sized fashion brand Yours, Mike George a construction and waste specialist, and MPB Structures.

Technology

The council in Peterborough are to launch a new digital platform to help connect customers to the front and back-end office processes which is a very exciting step forwards for the city.

Many university graduates are increasingly staying to live and work within the city, drawn by its affordable quality of life and the opportunity to find employment within the technology sector.

Peterborough is also leading the way with the world renown ‘smart city programme’. Early History

This city dates back to pre-Bronze Age, the Flag Fen archaeological site indicates human settlement evidence which is said to be around 3500 years old.

There was an occupation by the Romans too with finds of mass ceramic production. The Anglo Saxons built the Cathedral, but the population didn’t start to really grow until the Industrial Revolution through the establishment of the Great Northern Railway lines.

This is when the city became well known for brick manufacturing taking Peterborough from a market town to an industrial centre.

By the twentieth century Peterborough had become the leading area for brick production. In 1932 Perkins Engines based itself inside the city manufacturing diesel engines for the railways.

From 1971 to 1991 the population grew notably by 45.5% which drew in new industries such as service-based companies like Thomas Cook and Pearl Associations.
