Reading can be found as far back as the 8th century where there is evidence of trading happening in the town.
Around the same time in the Middle Ages, it seemed to have been a hub for the ecclesiastical. This was also when it was recorded that the largest and richest Abbey was built, certainly inside medieval times as it was founded by Henry I in 1121.
Incidentally, the once King is also buried there. Sadly, all that is left of this Abbey now are ruins as Henry VIII had the building destroyed in 1538 as part of the dissolution of monasteries.
By 1525 Reading became the largest town with a booming cloth trade but during the English Civil War Reading was all but destroyed.
1651 saw Rading come fighting back in the Glorious Revolution. We know Reading was a rich town, in fact the tenth richest in the UK according to the recorded taxable wealth table.
In the eighteenth century major ironworks arrived in Reading and with this the birth of the brewing trade.
Turnpike roads also had a major impact on the success of the town as it meant it was on the major coach routes.
The nineteenth century saw Great Western Railway further developing the town and its brewing, baking and seed manufacturing.
Today Reading is a major commercial centre especially in Technology and Insurance.
