Nottingham is home to two local universities and has a high rate of student retention thanks to its affordable quality of life and attractive job market.

A new centre for digital tech firms in Nottingham, Accelerate Places, was created by Blenheim Chalcot, who also co-sponsored Hack24, an event hosted in the city for coders.

Retail

Nottingham is home to a number of retail outlets and shopping centres, foremost of which is Victoria Centre which was built on the site where Nottingham Victoria railway station formerly stood.

With an integrated bus station and 2,400 parking spaces across several levels, Victoria Centre draws shoppers from across the city as well as visiting tourists. Currently under extensive redevelopment, Broadmarsh is Nottingham's other major shopping centre.

There are also a plethora of smaller shopping centres dotted throughout the city including the Exchange Arcade, the Flying Horse Walk, and Hockley.

Myriad designer shops can be found in the Bridlesmith Gate region which features the original Paul Smith Boutique.

Tourism

In 2018 Nottingham had the highest number of overnight visitors in the East Midlands, distinguishing the city as a major tourist destination within the region.

DK Travel ranked the city as one of the the “Top 10 Cities to Visit in 2010,” and in August 2017 TripAdvisor named Nottingham as the number one “Best Value City Break.” Tourism in Nottingham was worth £628 million in 2017, an increase of over four per cent on the previous year's figure.

There are a number of annual celebrations which attract visitors from around the country including the Robin Hood Pageant and Light Night.

A Ferris wheel was erected in Nottingham's Old Market Square in February of 2008 and returned to city in the same month of 2009 in conjunction with Light Night.

It was initially called the Nottingham Eye but was subsequently rebranded as the Nottingham Wheel to prevent any confusion with the London Eye.

Another major draw for tourists from across the country and around the world is the Sherwood Forest Country Park, a Natural Nature Reserve which covers 450 acres of land.

It's located 17 miles north of Nottingham in the county of Nottinghamshire and attracts approximately 350,000 visitors per year.

Other sights to see and things to do throughout Nottingham include the City of Caves, Wollaton Hall and Park, Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, the Haunted Museum, National Justice Museum, the Arboretum, Nottingham Industrial Museum, and Stonebridge City Farm.

Sport

Nottingham was named the “Home of English Sport” by the National Ice Centre in 2015.

Nottingham has also been named “the UK's first City of Football,” and is home to two professional teams – Notts County and Nottingham Forest, the latter who are famed for twice wining the UEFA European Cup.

Nottingham also has professional ice hockey, cricket, and rugby teams, and was also host to the Aegon Nottingham Open, a global tennis tournament.

The city is also famous for being the birthplace of Torvill and Dean, winners of gold medals at the 1984 Sarajevo Olympics for ice dance.

Nottingham's National Ice Centre, opened in 2000, stages numerous winter sporting events such as the UK Speed Skating Championships.

The venue is the home of the city's ice hockey team, Nottingham Panthers, and features a plaza named “Bolero Square” in homage to Torvill and Dean's gold medal-winning performance.

History

During the 1400s, Nottingham was famed for its export trade in religious sculpture fashioned from Nottingham alabaster.

By the time of the Industrial Revolution, Nottingham relied on its textile industry and developed into a globally significant hub for the manufacture of lace.

As with much of the textile sector throughout the country, Nottingham's textile industry declined during the 1950s onwards owing to competition from factories in South Asia and the Far East.

Whilst very little textile manufacture occurs in the city these days, there are still some original industrial buildings extant in the Lace Market district which have been subject to restoration and re-appropriated for new use.
