Google Chrome is stopping support for older versions of Windows

Have you upgraded to Windows 11 yet? Now could be the time.

Google will be releasing their final version of Chrome for older operating systems sometime next year (namely Windows 7 and Windows 8.1). The latest version, Chrome 110, is tentatively scheduled to be released on 7th February 2023 which will be the last version that supports the two older Microsoft operating systems. According to the Google support page, you’ll need to ensure that your device is running Windows 10 or later to continue receiving future Chrome releases.

Older versions of Chrome will continue to work as normal but there will be no further security updates released for users on Windows 7 and 8.1.

But most people will be on the latest OS versions, right? Not entirely.

After releasing in 2009, Windows 7 is still incredibly popular and hasn’t been phased out entirely, with support ending for it in 2020. Data suggests that as recently as last year, the number of devices that were still running Windows 7 was estimated to be at least 100 million PCs! This indicates that a huge amount of people are using an unsupported operated system, which could pose a major security risk.

If you’re still on a device running an older operating system, we strongly recommend upgrading as soon as you can. That way, you’ll be able to receive important updates and take advantage of latest features and improvements.
